We are very proud to unveil our new Carbon footprint calculator on this site.
Using the toolOur carbon footprint calculator has been developed for people who already understand the concept of carbon footprint measurement and have already used more superficial carbon calculator tools to get a sense of what is involved in measuring your carbon footprint.
Please note that this is a fairly comprehensive calculator that is intended to give you a high level of accuracy regarding your carbon footprint on the areas measured. It requires that you have a good sense of the detail related to how you travel, how you manage waste, your energy and water consumption.
We recommend that you first have a look at the full calculator and decide which aspects of your carbon footprint you would like to measure and for which period i.e. monthly or every 6 months or annually. Then make notes of the information you need to gather in order to work out your carbon footprint before you sit down to use the tool.
Project 90 Clubs that compete for prizes for carbon footprint reduction have to record data for similar periods in order to compare progress fairly. Club coordinators will assist Clubs in this regard.
We are working on the development of a food component on the carbon calculator and will alert our subscribers when this is added.
We have been collaborating with Indalo Yethu on the development of the calculator over the past few months and we thank them for their willingness to stay with the process of making this one of the more comprehensive carbon calculator tools currently available in South Africa.
The spreadsheet which the on-line tool has been based on was developed by Ryan Jordan who is an independent sustainability consultant. The on-line tool was developed by Peter Dennis at Logos Flow. We thank them both for their meticulous work. We also wish to thank Jasper Dick (UCT chemical eng.), Leanne Scott (UCT statistics), Stephen Law (EMG) and John Raimondo (our advisor on Energy audits) for their expert opinions on various aspects of the calculator during its development. Finally a heartfelt thanks to the entire project team, particularly Robert Fischer and Gary Fahy who happily participated in many trials to rigorously test the tool.
